When a fast-moving storm crossed west-central Indiana in June, a tree limb damaged a neighborhood power line near Crawfordsville. Within minutes, automated switches isolated the damaged section and restored service to most customers from another route.
That kind of response is the goal of IPE’s GridForward automation program. Sensors report changing conditions to the control center, while remotely operated switches give dispatchers more options for safely moving power.
Technology supports people in the field
Smart devices do not replace lineworkers. They help locate likely damage, reduce the area crews need to patrol and keep more customers energized while repairs are completed.
IPE plans to install 180 additional automated devices through 2028, focusing on circuits that serve emergency facilities and areas with long rural lines.
